Many significant prehistoric artifacts have been excavated at Rokkasho, including 12,000year-old pottery from the Jomon period and 145 different prehistoric ruins.
Among these ruins is an ancient village of significant historic value, on a scale rarely found elsewhere in Japan.
Historically, this region was famous for horse breeding. 200 year-old documents show that the names of the different settlements that marking RokkashoVillage originate from the horse-breeding days of the past. The inhabitants of Rokkasho were mainly farmers and fishermen. They loved nature and were grateful for the abundance it provided.
Although times and lifestyles have changed, this love of nature has been passed down through generations, and continues to thrive today.
