A National Petroleum Reserve is a crude oil inventory held by the government for the purpose of providing economic and national security during an energy crisis.
The first National Petroleum Reserve in Japan was built in 1983 at Rokkasho Village.
The 51 storage tanks hold enough petroleum to supply for Japan’s consumption needs for approximately one week. Strict safety measures are applied and great care taken toward the operation and maintenance of a National Petroleum Reserve.
