Rokkasho has a nuclear fuel reprocessing plant where the uranium used in nuclear power plants is reprocessed. Presently, nuclear power supplies one third of the electricity used in Japan.
Like other fossil fuels, uranium resources are limited, but the used nuclear fuel can be reprocessed and used again.
For Japan, scarce in natural resources, nuclear fuel cycle facilities will play a prominent role in meeting energy demands.
