International Fusion Energy Research Centre, and Aomori Research and Development Center in Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA)
Planning for the ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) Project, with its goal of harnessing fusion energy (the energy source of the sun) to produce electricity in a safe and environmentally friendly way, is underway.
Running parallel will the ITER plant at Cadarache, France, Rokkasho is home to the Broader Approach activities that form part of the cooperative agreement between the European Union and Japan. These activities include the development of the International Fusion Energy Research Center and the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility. Here, academic research facilities and the energy industry are working cooperatively towards the development of a prototype reactor, and to becoming an international focal point for this type of research. Japan Atomic Energy Agency has been designated as the Implementation Agency of the Japan side on the Broader Approach Project, and in Rokkasho, the Aomori Research and Development Center in JAEA has supported the activities of the Broader Approach Project.
