Rokkasho Village’s sister city relationship with the town of Waren, Germany has allowed for numerous exchange activities, and has furthered the friendship between these two regions. Rokkasho also enjoys ties with Yanyang, Korea.
As part of its goal to foster an internationally minded population, the village runs exchange programs, including study trips to Australia for elementary school students, the United States for junior high school students and Korea for high school students. English, German, Korean and other language classes are also offered in the village.
At the International Cultural Exchange Lounge (INCEL) in Rokkasho Village’s main shopping center, Japanese classes are held for foreigners living in the village. INCEL is also an information center where foreigners can ask the English speaking staff for information and assistance related to living in Japan and Aomori prefecture.
As a result of the establishment of various research facilities in the fields of environment, energy and technology, as well as numerous private businesses, the number of foreign researchers and their families who live in Rokkasho is set to increase. We believe the mingling of cultures will provide a blueprint for a Multi-culturally symbiotic society in this region.
