Thank you for visiting the Rokkasho Village homepage.

Our village is situated at the base of the Shimokita Peninsula, and is characterized by a varied coastline, vast lakes and marshes that gently mark the transitions between the four seasons.
Archeological relics and Jomon era remains found around the village point to an ancient history of prosperity in this area.
In 1889,during the Meiji period, the six settlements of the present area were unified to form a new autonomous local government. The newly-formed village was then named “Rokkasho”literally meaning “Six Places.”

Mayor of Rokkasho Village
KENJI FURUKAWA

Several years have passed since the Cabinet decided to approve the Mutsu Ogawara development plan as a national project in 1969. Since then, Rokkasho has seen the establishment of such projects as the Mutsu Ogawara National Petroleum Stockpile Reserves, the Nuclear Fuel Reprocessing Facility, and wind-generated power facilities. The ITER-related “Broader Approach”project is also well advanced now.

We owe our history to the ongoing and tireless efforts of our forebears. When looking back upon such history, it is our wish and mission to act as responsible caretakers of our rich hometown, surrounded by the blessings of nature, and to pass it on for the next generation to live in peace and prosperity. We do so by promoting the aims of “Safety and Peace of Mind”, “Education and Welfare”and a “Spirit of Harmony”.
I hope that this homepage will help you to understand our village.
Thank you very much for your support and cooperation.
